Born on a farm in Grand Blanc Township, Louise Reed-Stowell was an accomplished botanist, scientist, educator, and author. In 1877 she was the first woman hired to teach at the University of Michigan.

Moving to Washington, D.C. in 1889, she worked as a researcher for the USDA. President Cleveland appointed her the first woman on the board of the District of Columbia Public Schools.
